AB OBJECTIVE: Research conducted by ABIA's Resource Center interviewed 180
clients that currently or intend to disseminate information concerning
AIDS in their respective communities, in order to develop strategies
that explore the needs, actions, and goals of these educators and to
develop a more effective educational program. METHODOLOGY: Each subject
participated in a twenty minute semi-structured interview and completed
a questionnaire of 13 items (including demographic information).
RESULTS: The sample represented a wide spectrum of health professionals,
students, and organizational representatives. We noted a strong desire
for more accurate and accessible information concerning HIV/AIDS
presented in a comprehensive format that would make these persons more
effective leaders and sources of information in their communities. In
response to these findings, ABIA has implemented a training course (four
times per year) and produced an AIDS manual that targets the specific
concerns of these potential educators. CONCLUSION: In Brazil, limited
educational resources exist to respond to the large demand for HIV/AIDS
information and services. Developing comprehensive materials and
empowering persons to answer this demand in their own communities
remains fundamental to the fight against AIDS.
